Welcome to our Local History Group

A bit about Aston on Trent

Aston on Trent is a rural village approximately seven miles to the south west of Derby City. It has around 1600 residents and is known for its energetic and socially dynamic approach to life. Over thirty social, learning and recreational groups prosper, providing activities and events for all ages from the very young to the young at heart.

Aston was mentioned in the Domesday book, is near the site of a Neolithic settlement and has a wealth of social and working heritage. Until the early twentieth century much of the village and adjoining land was owned by wealthy families.

Much of the village is now a conservation area and contains a number of old and fascinating buildings. The annual Well Dressing Festival every July brings many visitors to view the locally decorated tableaux and accompanying stalls and entertainment.

A bit about our Local History Group

Aston is rich in heritage but until recently had no comprehensive record of its history or any organised collection of documents, photos or other archive material. There was a concern that many elderly residents in particular had no facilities to pass on a wealth of interesting stories of times past for future generations.

In September 2004 a small group of interested villagers met to set up a formally constituted Local History Group. The principal aim was (and is) to provide, maintain and develop a comprehensive history of Aston using a variety of formats, easily accessible to all and involving as many members of the community – young and old – as possible.

To date our Group is one of the fastest growing organisations in the village.

The Local History Group is grateful for project funding support from Awards for All and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
